Naming your Character - Text Translation and Guide

Upon starting a new game, you'll be asked to name the two main characters. This short guide will translate and walk you through that process.

主人公の名前を入力してください。
しゅじんこうのなまえをにゅうりょくください。
Please enter the name of the protagonist.

 瀬賀太郎
せがたろう
Sega Tarou
Note: Yes, that's right. The default name of our main protagonist is Sega Tarou. Tarou (or Taro) is a common suffix for boys names and is sometimes used as a surname, especially in Japanese legends and fables such as Kintaro (Golden Boy) or Momotaro (Peach Boy).

Below the name there are five tabs for the four different types of characters widely used in Japan. If you don't know what hiragana, katakana and kanji are, you'll probably want to either stick with the default name or enter the name in English.

ひらがな
Hiragana

カタカナ
Katakana

漢字
かんじ
Kanji

英語記号
えいごきごう
English

自動
Automatic
Note: This option will pick a random name for you.
You can switch between these tabs by pushing R and L.  You can either enter a unique name or keep the original name (Sega Tarou). Once finished, simply go to the END button and the game will ask you to confirm your choice.

After pushing the END button, the game will ask you to confirm your choice. Just hit A to continue.

ヒロインの名前を入力してください。
ヒロインのなまえをにゅうりょくしてください。
Please enter the name of the heroine.
A similar screen as above will appear next but instead of 瀬賀太郎, the default name will be...
羽田弥生
はねだやよい
Haneda Yayoi
Note: Haneda is the district of Tokyo where Sega headquarters were located for more than 50 years. They feature prominently in the game, and you even see them in the intro movie, opening movie of chapter 1 and as the location of a puppet show upon completing each chapter. Unfortunately, they were sold in April last year and Sega have since moved their headquaters to Shinagawa.
Why they went with Yayoi for the first name, I couldn't tell you. There was a former Sega employee named Yayoi Wachi who worked on a number of Game Gear and Saturn titles, but for all I know this could just be a coincidence.

The process for entering the name is exactly the same as for the protagonist above.

Congratulations. Chapter 1 is about to start...
